KINGDOM OF ILLUSIONS
is an intercultural civil society network, connecting citizens living in EUROPE inside EUROPE with citizens in EUROPE outside EUROPE. This network is active on different levels since 2003. The borders between these citizens determine also cultural and social differences. Kingdom of Illusions understands differences as the source for mutual interest and common projects.

KINGDOM OF ILLUSIONS survived without monetary fundings so far. The resource for all activities was and still is the commitment of civil society activists and artists on both sides of the EU borders, which are dividing Europe. Based on civil commitment and creativity, the network initiates mutual culture exchange, civil society activities and intercultural cooperations on the level of citizens.

In 2005, the City of Linz awarded Kingdom of Illusions for intercultural commitment. In 2007, it received the Hans-Nerth-Radio-Award. Below you find short descriptions of selected activities. For more specific informations, please send your request to our email box

CULTURE EXCHANGE
Since October 2003, more than 80 culture events in Zrenjanin, Novi Sad, Belgrade, Brest, Minsk, Baranovichi, Novopolotsk and Linz united more than 200 artists and culture activists born and living in different types of Europe - like Mazedonia, Bosnia, Serbia, Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Austria and Germany. More than 20.000 visitors joined their common activities so far: exhibitions, photo safaris, concerts, dance events, workshops, film screenings, ...

KINGDOM OF ILLUSIONS creates a framework, in which the individual experience of culture exchange and interdisciplinary cooperation is embedded. Where people are working face to face and hand in hand, language barriers are not significant. For Kingdom of Illusions, culture exchange is an individual experience, which must be gained without any media between. Consuming informations about other cultures has nothing to do with culture exchange.

CIVIL SOCIETY PROJECTS
In 2004, Kingdom of Illusions organized citizen workshops in Novi Sad and Belgrade for to create face to face cooperations, which should remain sustainable and independent from political and economical instability. Looking backwards, this strategy was the best solution. Some of these cooperations last for half a decade now. Despite all difficulties, most activities resulted in mutual invitations and visits across the borders of the EU. With their self-organised cooperations, these living bridges are representing an avantguarde of an European Community, which does not exist yet.

FREE TRAVELLING IN EUROPE
Based on collective experience, Kindom of Illusions was the first culture initiative inside the EU, which claimed free travelling visa for all European citizens living <in Europe outside Europe>. When politicians are travelling free (and most of them also FOR free) all over Europe, how can they feel or to understand, what the actual visa regime of the EU means for citizens without the freedom of travelling?

Kingdom of Illusions will continue to focus on this important change. Exactly two decades after the wall in Berlin was torn down, the EU visa regime must fall. No European citizen must feel like she or he was born in a jail - surrounded by invisible bars.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Kingdom of Illusions challenges culture exchange not only from an artistic perspective. This is the reason why the network collected several times civil goods in Austria for to transport them with trucks to Serbia (Province Vojvodina) as an act of mutual respect and social responsibility. In cooperation of committed citizens in Austria and Serbia, the Muncipality of Zrenjanin, the local radio station Kojot Radio, activists of the NGOs Kulturni Front and Novi Optimizam, the donations were handed over to the Social Center of Zrenjanin. Kingdom of Illusions thanks all people supporting these activities with donations, transport facilities, (fake) custom papers, accomodation, food and friendship all along our way. report | pdf | Serbian

SOLIDARITY WITH BELARUS
Since 2004, activists of Kingdom of Illusions are supporting citizens in Belarus, which are oppressed by political, ideological, social or structural discrimination. These living bridges are commited in the developement of democracy, human rights, fundamental freedom of speech and expression, freedom of media and artistic freedom in cooperation with artists and citizens in (or from) Belarus.

The main goal of the activities is to destroy the fear, which exists in the Belarusian society. Thousands of living bridges are needed until 2011 to support civil society in Belarus. Therefore, each EU citizen must understand, that she or he has an individual possibility to fight the last post-soviet regime in Europe. In 2007, Kingdom of Illusions organised the first exhibition inside the European Union (EU) about Freedom of Media | Free Media with the specific focus on situation of independent media and artistic freedom in Belarus. This exhibition will go on tour in 2010.

KINGDOM OF ILLUSION CLUB @ Café Strom in Linz/Austria
Since 2003, deejays, electronic music performers and visual artists are creating this club night. It is a combination of multimedia art and dance event hosted by the Austrian DJ Acid Buzz, who settled this culture labority for non-commercial expression at Café Strom in Linz, right in the neighbourhood of the ARS Electronica Center (AEC).

The club night is a place for people, which want to meet international standards of electronic music and realtime visual arts. With this interdisciplinary approach, Kingdom of Illusions became an interface for young visual artists and the non-commercial club scene in Austria. GENDER CLUBBING @ Café Strom in Linz | Austria
The next social innovation initiated by Kingdom of Illusions started in December 2007. Supported by KUPF Innovation Fund, young artists organize multimedia genderclubbings based on gender equality of all participients. The target is the developement of a new social model inside the club scene, which is still dominated by male artists. On the other hand, genderclubbing contradicts one-sided counter-concepts, which are based on the exclusion of male artists.

Invited artists are not only performing at Genderclubbings, they are also discussing on a radio show (Radio FRO) their individual gender experiences inside the club scene. Aside this discussions, producers of the main alternative culture institutions in Linz were interviewed about gender practises in booking artists. HOTEL BALKAN | radio show
Since 2004, the HOTEL BALKAN radio show is broadcasted each Friday from 9 - 10 p.m. CET on RADIO FRO and RADIO FRF. HOTEL BALKAN is connected with the radio network CROSSRADIO in South-East Europe. Since November 2005, HOTEL BALKAN is also broadcasted in Southern Bohemia (Czech Republic) on the frequence of RADIO FRF 107,0 MHz.

In 2005, the intercultural and multilingual radio show has been voted by the Radio FRO audience as most popular radio show. Selected shows were downloaded more than 1.500 times a month from the HOTEL BALKAN homepage

Wir fordern mit dieser Kundgebung die EU-Ratsvorsitzende, Frau Dr. Ursula Plassnik und die EU-Außenkommissarin, Frau Dr. Benita Ferrero-Waldner auf, ihr Mandat als die politischen Vertreterinnen Österreichs und der EU wahr zu nehmen, indem sie ohne weiteren Verzug wirkungsvolle politische Maßnahmen gegen die massiven Verletzungen der Menschenrechte in Belarus wahrnehmen.

Wir vermissen eine angemessene Reaktion der genannten VertreterInnen Österreichs und der EU seit Sonntag, den 19. März 2006. Seither wurden alleine in Minsk mehr als 500 BürgerInnen, die friedlich für das Recht auf Versammlungs- und Meinungsfreiheit protestiert haben, menschenrechtswidrig verhaftet und zu Haftstrafen verurteilt.

Diesen Verhaftungen hätte durch ein unverzügliches und entschiedenes Vorgehen der aussenpolitischen VertreterInnen Österreichs und der EU möglicherweise Einhalt geboten werden können. Daher richtet sich dieser Protest mit Nachdruck an

das Österreichische Bundesministerium für europäische und internationale Angelegen-heiten, vertreten durch die EU-Ratsvorsitzende und Aussenministerin der Republik Österreich, Frau Dr. Ursula Plassnik

sowie an das Kabinett der Kommissarin für Auswärtige Beziehungen der Europäischen Union, Frau Dr. Benita Ferrero-Waldner, welche wir bereits im Dezember 2005 über unsere begründete Besorgnis bezüglich der Menschenrechtsverletzungen im Vorfeld der Wahlen in Belarus (Weißrussland) informiert und um Unterstützung ersucht haben.
